Piglets enjoy sun
May 6, 2011
We are in the process of a major upheaval as the warm weather is forcing us to get our animals outside into appropriate spaces. Sure, we could leave the ruminants on the space the defoliated at the end of last year, and we could keep the pigs inside a little longer. But no animals would be happy with that.
So I spent the day today setting up a new enclosure for our boys and considering how I will go about setting up a new pasture in our orchard for the sheep and goats. Emma has a crazy idea about how to build a shelter using only materials found on the farm. It's like a game show, but instead of a cool prize, we're motivated by mind-numbing poverty.
Of course, with all the animals, a healthy baby girl and our health, it's hard to consider ourselves poor. Cash flow is tight, but it's hard to not feel hopeful when spring comes around.
Besides getting the piglets out in the sun and our plan to get the ruminants on a fresh pasture, we had a marvelously productive weekend last week and got a lot of our garden squared away. Greens are in, as are peas, onion sets and brassicas (cabbage, broccoli, etc.). Hard work pays off, and while it may not seem apparent when you're struggling through a crappy garden year, there is work going all the time that gets paid forward.
